Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
After watch both games and looking towards the end of transfer window.

Burke - decent but still some wobbles even at centre half. He was getting games so sent him back to Bolton.

Cullen - best over the two games. Did not play as much as Burke at Bolton and we need something else in his position. Give him a chance for the second half and hope that does not prevent getting another midfielder in.

Oxford - Tough as it was only part of one game but looked like he could not be bothered. Was starting to get games so send him back to Germany and after that sadly if he doesn't want to fight for a spot at West Ham, see what we can get.

Martinez - just a bit more of a look than Oxford, so we will see but watching him live reminded me of doing the same with Calleri, will work hard but not fast enough on the ground, not strong enough in the air and did not finish the chances he had on a bigger stage. Might need a loan as well. He is 21 in June.

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
I think Moyes has got a tricky decision on his hands. So far they have only played against Shrewsbury. They could do better against better opposition, you see that all the time. personally my thoughts are that they are good enough to be around the first team squad, but perhaps not good enough to start in the PL. So would they be better served going somewhere on loan to play week in week out? Probably.

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
IF (note big if) we maintain mid table safety then Moyes should begin to give Burke, Cullen, Martinez, Haksabanovic & Holland (when he's back) some game time from the bench... 20 mins here and there as often as possible. Those that impress get longer on the pitch. It's the only way that we are going to see if they have what it takes.

If Moyes can't see himself doing that then they might as well go out on loan.

I'm most surprised that Haksabanovic hasn't been given more of a run out... he looked good when he played against Bolton but has only been an unused sub a few times now... I know it was only Sweden but he has played nearly 100 first team games and is a full international, he also has a spark of creativity! Would be good to see more of him!

Yeah, I'd like to see more of Haksabanovic

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
I heard a Noble interview earlier in the week in which he said Haksabanovic looked really good in training.

Lanzini has played a lot of football recently and Haksabanovic looks the perfect replacement.... assuming Saturday is going okay it makes sense to take Lanzini off after 60 and give Sead 30 mins against Bournemouth.

Strange Hakšabanovic did not get some time.

Unless it was just a case of trying to see those that might be leaving again. And then having to put on senior players to win the game.

The impression I got was that those that have been given a chance are the ones that Moyes thinks will go out on loan unless they can show him the deserve to be in the first team squad. I presume that Sead in that case will be staying with us for development, rather than going out on loan.

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
The thing that bothers me is that it seems very little thought is given to blooding younger players.

Playing a team where half are kids is not what I call giving them a proper chance. The chances of them all playing out of their skin and showing what they can do is unlikely.

I'd much rather see one given a few games in the first team, around senior players so they don't have such a big responsibility. They will have a much better chance of playing around better, more experienced players and also test them against better opposition.

I think we have failed a lot of youngsters over the years by allowing their progress to stagnate in this way. Picked for the bench but never used then thrown in with a load of other kids in a game against albeit lower league - experienced men. It's no surprise they find that difficult and then get their confidence shattered.

Much better to put 1 in the starting XI against Bournemouth and see how he does... but then start him in the next few games after that, or bring him on as a sub. I hate the way players are getting judged on very little football.

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
Not brilliant but did not expect them to be .
I think blooding 4-5 at a time does not help if it were two and more senior players to give them more confidence it might have been better.
Reece was the one I wanted to see most and he was pretty pants the rest were competent, sort of .

With respect in the second game the seniors were just as average for 70 minutes.

Agree

That said, pretty hard to do if you are looking at relegation or even at the other end, looking a Europe. We have been doing one of the two for good parts of the last three seasons.

Exactly what they have done with Declan Rice and he has been able to show what he can do.

Would like to see Burke & Cullen kept and given the sale treatment.

Yep - but playing with inexperienced kids can't help.

It's been this way for far too long and a big reason I believe as to why we haven't seen any kids break through since Tomkins?

That has been a decent approach under Moyes.

That said, I don't think Burke did enough for me to say he would not just sit and he was getting more games than Cullen at Bolton.

Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
My impression is they seem to have to think before acting. In this short process of time they've lost the initiative. When Nobes came on I remember him swiftly first touching a ball out left to Arthur and it moved the whole play really quickly. I would suggest this is an issue with all average football of course but it was very clear with these lads.
I assume they were told not to make a mistake which means a bit more care is probably taken?

Trevor B 12:40 Thu Jan 18
Re: Your thoughts on the youths after a couple cup games.
Do you think that any player is told not to make mistakes?

I would imagine they were just being overly cautious, knowing that their first team involvement probably hinged on decent performances, and certainly not looking our of their depth and nervous.

Hopefully it means Moyes has plans for him and he wanted to play the players he was thinking of sending away (Rice did not play the second game, for instance.)
